Project Overview
In this case study, I’ll detail the strategy I implemented for Maguire Family Law, a specialist law firm, helping them gain prominent visibility within Google’s AI Overviews as part of my work with RMS – PR | Marketing | Design.
My focus was on optimising key service pages to establish the firm’s authority on specific family law topics. A significant outcome I achieved was securing a featured placement in AI Overviews for their page targeting the term “cohabitees”.
The Challenge
Maguire Family Law approached me seeking to enhance their online presence and be recognised as a leading authority in complex family law areas, like the rights of unmarried couples. The primary challenge I faced was creating and optimising content that would:
- Rank highly for competitive keywords I identified, such as “cohabitees” and “cohabitation rights”.
- Clearly answer user queries regarding cohabitee rights in the UK.
- Achieve visibility in Google’s AI Overviews.
- Solidify the firm’s reputation for expertise in this legal niche.
My Strategy
To meet these objectives, I executed a targeted content and technical SEO strategy focused on the ‘Cohabitee Rights’ service page:
- Keyword Research & Content Creation: First, I conducted in-depth keyword research, identifying “cohabitees” and related terms as key targets. Based on this research, I wrote a comprehensive landing page designed to directly address user search intent. This involved providing clear definitions, explaining legal implications, and offering advice on cohabitation agreements.
- Authoritative Content: I crafted the content to be legally accurate, informative, and accessible, aiming to establish clear expertise on UK cohabitation law.
- Strategic Formatting: I used clear headings, concise paragraphs, and bullet points to structure the information logically, which improves readability for both users and search engines.
- Technical SEO & Schema Implementation: On the technical side, I implemented multiple relevant schema markups on the page. As you can see from the screenshot, this included Organisation, BreadcrumbList, Service, and BlogPosting schema, providing explicit context to search engines about the page’s content and purpose.

The Results
My strategic optimisation work yielded significant results for the client:
- Featured in Google AI Overviews: The ‘Cohabitee Rights’ page I optimised for Maguire Family Law was selected by Google to feature prominently in the AI Overview generated for the search term “cohabitees”. You can see this highlighted in the provided screenshot.
- Top Search Rankings: The page achieved the number 1 ranking position for the primary keyword “cohabitees”. Furthermore, my work helped the firm secure top rankings for other valuable keywords I targeted, including “prohibited steps order without notice” (#1) and “countries that don’t enforce child support uk” (#1), alongside a strong #8 position for “cohabitation rights”, as shown in the rank tracking image from Ahrefs.
- Enhanced Authority: Appearing directly within the AI Overview elevates the perceived authority and trustworthiness of Maguire Family Law on this subject.
- Increased Visibility: The combination of high organic rankings I achieved and the AI Overview placement substantially boosted the page’s visibility in search results.

Key Takeaways
This project demonstrated to me that targeted, high-quality content, which I developed, combined with the technical optimisation I implemented, can achieve significant visibility in Google’s AI-driven search features.
From my perspective, the key factors contributing to this result were:
- Developing expert content that directly answers specific user queries.
- My strategic keyword targeting based on thorough research.
- My implementation of relevant schema markup to help search engines understand content context.
The inclusion of Maguire Family Law in AI Overviews for “cohabitees” shows that Google recognises and rewards content that demonstrates clear expertise and authority; all qualities I focused on building into the page.
